Avathar Movie

Avatar Movie Review :

And we thought sinkiing the Titanic was a titan task! Well, this time round, James Cameron chooses to play god and creates a whole new world with such exquisite finesse, aesthete and eye for detail, he almost takes your breath away. In terms of sheer technology, Avatar marks the comiing of age of both CGI and 3-D cinema with its art house special effects and its shock and awe treatment. On the one hand, it's the sheer iridescence of the canvas and the never-before contours of the creatures, the flora, the fauna flyiing across the screen that makes you marvel at how computers can augment creativity; on the other, it is the umpteen times you jump back to avoid the arrows, the guns or slide away from the floatiing dandelions and fierce raptors that leaves you completely mesmerised with this brand new cinematic experience. Truly, Cameron's vision of Pandora is pure art, with its tall, wide-eyed, slender, blue Na'vi people, it's post-modern creatures and its verdant greens. But more than all this, it is Cameron's cry against war and violence that makes Avatar an eloquent testimonial to the present. Mercifully, the film isn't visual extravaganza alone; it has a meaniingful story too that could end up makiing this magnum opus a modern-day parable for pacifists, climatologists, humanists, globalists.... For the filmmaker openly indicts America for its post 9/11 expansionist policies and clearly states: ``when people are sittiing on shit that you want, you make them your enemies. That is the only way you justify takiing the stuff away from them!'' Stuff? Minerals, heeree. Oil, in the real world.
Grammys to honor Michael Jackson
The Grammy Awards will honor Michael Jackson, seen here rehearsing for the London concert series he never got to perform.

TV Of course the Grammy Awards can't go by without honoring Michael Jackson, who died suddenly in June. To honor the late singer, the awards show will broadcast a 3-D clip the singer made for "Earth Song," while performers including Jennifer Hudson, Smokey Robinson, and Carrie Underwood sing alongside the clip. You'll need the special glasses, available free at Target. (Grammys air Jan. 31, 8 p.m., CBS.)

"House" returns! The crabby doctor apparently attempts to make amends to a medical-school colleague he wronged long ago. House, apologize? This we've gotta see... (Jan. 25, 8 p.m., Fox.)
MoviesDid Mel Gibson's anti-Semitic, anti-woman rant back in 2006 forever ruin his movies for you, or can you separate the man from the movies? We'll find out this week if moviegoers still care. Gibson stars as a detective investigating the murder of his activist daughter in "Edge of Darkness," an adaptation of a British TV show from the 1980s. (In theaters Jan. 29.)

DVD If you didn't make it to Michael Jackson's "This Is It!" when the late singer's concert-planning documentary hit theaters, now's your chance. The film features some of the very last footage of the legendary singer performing, as he planned for his 50-show London concert series that was never to be. The film surprised Roger Ebert, who called it "an extraordinary documentary, nothing at all like what I was expecting to see." (Out on DVD Jan. 26.

OSAMA

Washington responds to 'Bin Laden tape'

The US has said a tape purported to be from al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden simply repeats "hollow justifications for the mass slaughter of innocents".
White House adviser David Axelrod also said that the US could not confirm the authenticity of the audio tape.
The tape warned US President Barack Obama there would be more attacks if the US continued to support Israel.
In the tape aired by al-Jazeera, the speaker said US would not live in peace until there was "peace in Palestine".
The message also claimed that al-Qaeda was behind the 25 December attempt to blow up a passenger plane bound for the US.
A Nigerian man, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, has been charged with attempting to blow up the Delta Airlines plane as it approached Detroit from Amsterdam.
'No safe life'
Mr Axelrod told CNN the US could not immediately confirm the authenticity of the tape.
This is nothing new; he has said this before. Terrorists always look for absurd excuses for their despicable deeds
Andy David,Israeli foreign ministry spokesman

"But assuming that it is him [Bin Laden], his message contains the same hollow justifications for the mass slaughter of innocents that we've heard before," he said.
Israeli foreign ministry spokesman Andy David told Associated Press news agency: "This is nothing new; he has said this before. Terrorists always look for absurd excuses for their despicable deeds."
And in London, UK Foreign Secretary David Miliband said he needed to study the message, but pointed to the importance of the Detroit plot as "an attack on the West rather than an attack within the Middle East".
However, the head of the United Nations al-Qaeda monitoring team later told the BBC he believed the tape was genuine.
Richard Barrett said that there were "other, previous tapes that it can be compared with and I think it's quite straightforward on basic voice analysis to decide whether it is indeed Osama Bin Laden".
"And I would imagine in this case that it will be."
'No safe life'
The voice recording said that the message was from "Osama to Obama".
Directly addressing Americans, it said: "It is unfair you enjoy a safe life while our brothers in Gaza suffer greatly... Our attacks will continue as long as you support Israel."
It went on: "America will never dream of security unless we will have it in reality in Palestine."
The Washington-based IntelCenter, which monitors terror group communications, said the message was a possible indicator of an attack within the next 12 months.
'Hero' Abdulmutallab
In a reference to the plane plot, the message said: "If it was possible to carry our messages to you by words we wouldn't have carried them to you by planes."
It said: "The message sent to you with the attempt by the hero Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab is a confirmation of our previous message conveyed by the heroes of September 11."
Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab allegedly tried to set off a bomb hidden in his underwear but it failed to explode. He said he had been trained by al-Qaeda in Yemen.
The al-Qaeda in the Arabian peninsula group has already claimed it was behind the Christmas Day attempted bombing.
The BBC's Kim Ghattas in Washington says the message may cast some light over the inner workings of al-Qaeda and its affiliates.
Some US intelligence officials said the tape was an attempt by the al-Qaeda leader to portray himself as in direct command of the organisation and all its offshoots.
Analysts have long debated whether Bin Laden is really in control, our correspondents says.
The al-Qaeda leader issues sporadic tape messages, the last being in September 2009 when President Obama was warned he was "powerless" to stop the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The last purported Bin Laden video appeared in September 2007, when he referred to French President Nicolas Sarkozy and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who had both recently come to power

Haiti earth quake

Haiti capital earthquake death toll 'tops 150,000'

Hundreds of Haitians joined open-air church services in the capital
The confirmed death toll from Haiti's devastating earthquake has risen above 150,000 in the Port-au-Prince area alone, a government minister has said.
Communications Minister Marie-Laurence Jocelyn Lassegue said the count was based on bodies collected in and around the capital by state company CNE.
Many more bodies remain uncounted under rubble in the capital, including the towns of Jacmel and Leogane.
The search for survivors has officially ended and the focus has shifted to aid.
But there is disagreement about how well the aid operation is doing, with the head of Italy's civil protection service making highly critical comments.
Nobody knows how many bodies are buried in the rubble - 200,000, 300,000?
Marie-Laurence Jocelyn LassegueCommunications Minister
Guido Bertolaso, who is in Haiti to co-ordinate relief efforts, also criticised what he saw as the presence of too many American soldiers.
He said they had no training in running a civilian relief operation.
"When there is an emergency, it triggers a vanity parade. Lots of people go there anxious to show that their country is big and important, showing solidarity", he said.
He called on the United Nations to establish a procedure to follow when major natural disasters occur.
As the death toll in Haiti has risen, it has become clear the 12 January quake is one of the worst natural disasters to have struck in recent years.
Some say the 7.0-magnitude quake killed as many as 200,000 people, while an estimated 1.5 million people have been left homeless.
Ms Lassegue said that the authorities were still far from knowing the total number of those killed.
"Nobody knows how many bodies are buried in the rubble - 200,000, 300,000? Who knows the overall death toll?" the Associated Press quotes her as saying on Sunday.
Speaking to reporters a day earlier, she said the general hospital had received about 10,000 corpses, which it had handed over to CNE for burial.
At least 75,000 people have been buried in mass graves since the disaster. Relatives have also burnt the bodies of some of the victims.
'Tremendous need'
Thousands of people joined open-air church services in Port-au-Prince, Leogane - the epicentre of the earthquake - and elsewhere on Sunday.
A day after the funeral of the capital's Roman Catholic archbishop, Father Glanda Toussaint celebrated Mass at an altar improvised on a wooden table by the wrecked cathedral.
